1911 - The beginning and origins of HARTMANN MÖBELWERKE

The origins of the company date back to 1911 . On the site where the administration building stands today, Bernhard Hartmann built a carpentry workshop. The typical activity of these early years revolves around carpentry work of various kinds. Already in the thirties the company was specializing in the production of furniture. Bedroom furniture and living room furniture are made in small batches. Now, the catchment area extends to the Ruhr area. At the start of the Second World War, the company employs around 15 people. During the war years, production almost completely stopped, as almost all young workers were drafted into the Wehrmacht . But with the end of the war and the introduction of the D-Mark , there was a rapid increase in the demand for furniture.

50s - 80s Optimism increases the production of their furniture

Supported by his eldest son Bernhard Theodor Hartmann , b. 1926, the reorganization and expansion of the company begins. Driven by the optimistic spirit of the early 1950s, and driven by the dynamism of the young boss, the company now increasingly thinks and acts on an industrial scale. In the 1960s, he began marketing furniture nationwide. From 1967 onwards, the Cologne furniture fair became the most important trade fair for the company. Meanwhile, dealerships had been set up throughout Germany. In the period between 1965 and 1980 , new and large pavilions were built. Today, these comprise an area covering approx. 22,000 sq m . Up to 250 employees were employed at the Beelen plant at peak times in the late 1970s.

The 80s and the import problem

The second half of the 80s was characterized by economic difficulties for the company. The market for rustic German period furniture, in which the company specialized in the 1970s, was now in decline and was also threatened by an increase in the volume of cheap imports from Eastern Europe. Declining sales, short-time work and job cuts characterized the 1980s. During this time, Bernhard Heinrich Hartmann, the current owner, joins the company and the management team. 90s until today

1990s UNTIL TODAY HARTMANN establishes itself as a leading company in the sector

In the early 90s, thanks to the innovative sales staff, the company managed to reposition itself on the market. The market for solid organic furniture was created and the Hartmann was able to successfully establish itself in this niche. In 1995, the company went into business with a subsidiary in Poland, which took over the supply of glued wood panels from the parent company. Today, about 60% of glued wood panels and prefabricated components are produced there.

The word to the connoisseur: The only pieces of furniture that can carry this designation are those in which all wooden parts, with the exception of the back walls, drawer frames and drawer bottoms, are made of solid wood.
